Following the decision to conduct a 60 day review of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, there has been renewed calls to consider using the Penrith whitewater rafting site instead of building one in Birkdale.
The two-month review will involve a cost-analysis to determine whether the Brisbane Games venues represent the best use of taxpayer cash.
Premier Steven Miles said the review committee would consider whether the venues were delivering value for money, fit-for-purpose, deliverability and community legacy.
State member for Capalaba and Chief Whip Don Brown said reviewing the Penrith site as an option for the whitewater rafting event could save $100 million.
Mr Brown said the Penrith site used during the 2000 Sydney Olympics is still adequate and exploring this option would hugely lower the cost to taxpayers.
“I’m making a submission to the review, calling to investigate the option of hosting the whitewater rafting event in Penrith,” he said.
“There’s nothing that says all of the Olympic venues need to be in the host state.
“We need to be exploring every single option and keeping costs to a minimum.
“The review committee could save $100 million simply by reviewing the option.
“There are also numerous sensitivities with the Birkdale location, namely the two heritage-listed sites sitting on it - the WW2 radio station and Willards Farm.
“There are also environmental factors to be considered with the Birkdale site which include the koalas onsite.”
