A Capalaba man has been recognised for his decades of community service as a Justice of the Peace (JP).
Last Thursday February 29 John Horton was formally presented with a certificate issued by the Queensland Attorney-General recognising his 50 years working as a JP.
This involves the certifying of official documents and witnessing of affidavits for court matters.
Mr Horton said he put his hand up to become a JP after observing the frequency of requests for JP services and how in demand they were.
He said getting his JP qualification allowed him to assist people both through his work and personally.
An avid volunteer, service to the community has been at the forefront ever since his early involvement with the Scouts.
This led to volunteering for St John’s First Aid, the Army Reserve, Queensland Rural Fire Service, as well as with sporting groups and a brass band.
Most recently, Mr Horton is an advocate for the Circle of Men Organisation which sees a group of men visiting aged care homes and having conversations with lonely and isolated male residents.
“Being able to actively partake in offering service to others is most satisfying and rewarding,” Mr Horton said.
“It brings me into contact with so many interesting people,” he said.
“Getting to visit often isolated male residents is a genuine highlight – who wouldn’t enjoy mixing with living history?”
Capalaba State Member Don Brown MP met with Mr Horton and presented him with his long service certificate.
“I would like to congratulate and thank John for his valuable service to the community.
“This is a huge achievement and a true testament to his character.”
